Course Overview
As the UK’s Smart Metering Rollout accelerates, this course provides qualified domestic gas engineers with the essential skills to transition into Smart Electric Meter installation. Designed for professionals looking to expand their expertise, this program delivers both technical training and hands-on experience to ensure competency in the growing field of smart metering technology.
The course includes:
- Five days of intensive in-person workshops at our training centre, covering key installation techniques and industry best practices.
- Up to three weeks of practical, field-based mentoring, working alongside experienced professionals to develop real-world skills.
- Comprehensive support throughout your learning journey, including portfolio development and full preparation for the final assessment.
Upon successful completion, participants will achieve certification as a Smart Electric Meter Installer and gain EUSR registration, ensuring they meet the highest industry standards and are fully equipped to work in this evolving sector.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Day 1 to 5: Intensive In-Person Training (08:30 – 16:00 daily)
The first five days of the course are focused on building foundational knowledge and practical skills needed for the role of a Smart Meter Installer. The training takes place at our Gateshead Training Centre and includes both theoretical and hands-on practical elements.

Practical Session: Completing a full meter installation from start to finish (under instructor supervision)
Week 2 and 3: Field-Based Mentoring (08:00 – 18:00 daily, based on mentor’s shift pattern)
Following the intensive training at the centre, you will transition into field-based mentoring. During this stage, you’ll apply the knowledge gained during the in-person sessions in real-world settings, with guidance and support from experienced Smart Metering Installers.
- Week 2:
- Fieldwork begins, with a mentor guiding you through live meter installations.
- Hands-on Work: Completing meter exchanges on various sites, ensuring full compliance with industry standards.
- Portfolio Development: Building a portfolio of evidence, documenting your work, and getting signed off for each completed installation (min. 10 jobs).
- Daily debriefing with mentor to discuss progress and challenges.
- Focus on safe working practices and ensuring all installations meet regulatory requirements.
- Fieldwork begins, with a mentor guiding you through live meter installations.
- Week 3:
- Continue to work on live installations with increasing responsibility.
- Focus on developing your confidence in dealing with customers, offering energy-saving advice, and resolving any installation issues.
- Ongoing Mentoring: Further development of your portfolio, ensuring all requirements are met.
- Exposure to different meter types and configurations, including handling complex installation environments.
- Final preparations for the formal assessment phase.
- Continue to work on live installations with increasing responsibility.
Day 6 & 7: Formal Assessment (08:30 – 16:00)
After completing the fieldwork and portfolio, you’ll return to the Training Centre for your final assessment, which will evaluate both your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

- The assessment will cover your competency in installing, testing, and troubleshooting smart meters.
- You will be assessed on customer interaction, safety protocols, and technical accuracy.

- 1-day preparation session:
Before your final assessment, we provide a full day to revise and refresh key concepts. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, review any areas of difficulty, and practice key installation techniques in a supportive environment.- This session will give you confidence and ensure you are fully prepared for the assessment phase.
